Transcendental
& Mindfulness |
Meditation is a practice
in which an individual learns to achieve greater physical relaxation,
mental calmness and mind-body balance. There are two common types of
meditation, transcendental and mindfulness. Each has 4 common elements
which include:
1. Quiet Location
2. Comfortable Posture (sitting, lying, standing, walking)
3. Focusing One's Attention
4. Open Attitude
Transcendental meditation ™ uses a word, sound, or phrase which
is silently repeated, called a mantra. This prevents distracting thoughts
from entering the mind. This allows the mind and body to enter a deeply
relaxed state of alertness.
Mindfulness meditation is based on having an increased awareness
or total acceptance of the present. The individual focuses all of his
or her attention on their breathing or thoughts that are being experienced
without reacting to or judging them. This allows the individual to experience
normal daily life thoughts and experiences with greater acceptance and
balance.
Meditation may be used to enhance or promote overall general wellness
or to assist in the treatment of certain conditions such as: anxiety/depression,
pain, mood & self-esteem problems, insomnia, stress, or as an adjunct
to treatment for a chronic medical condition (cancer, heart disease,
diabetes). Additional information may be obtained at www.holisticwebworks.com.
